Machine Pistol
A machine pistol, sometimes referred to as a submachine gun, is a compact small-arm with automatic fire capability, usually chambered in pistol cartridges.
While originally a niche concept conceived in the 1800s, it saw little use in the various wars between Tekkea, Radosis and Sas compared to the larger rifles more suited to long-range engagements, as well as mechanised vehicles. However, the interest for the concept was revived in Ihazon in 1918 after the release of the HT SMG-1, affectionately known as the Typewriter.
Distinctions
There is discussion among firearm experts/enthusiasts as to whether the terms should be used interchangeably or not. Many insist that 'machine pistol' only refers to compact, pistol-sized variants, while 'submachine gun' anything that is larger. This is made worse by the confusing use of the terms even among manufacturers.
The 'creators' of the modern machine pistol frequently used the term to refer to all automatic firearms chambered in pistol cartridges. Though discussion over what exactly constitutes as a 'pistol cartridge' continues to this day.
