The day is seen as a sort of "celebration" of women, and is often used to raise awareness of issues primarily concerning those of the female gender. However, many people, particularly men, have raised criticism at the lack of a subsequent Men's Day.

Despite common belief, this day is, not restricted to only women who travel frequently or otherwise globetrot ("international" women). The "international" refers to the fact that the day is acknowledged (=agreed upon to be "valid") in more than one than one country. If it was to be only acknowledged in a single country, it would instead be the National Women's Day. Makes sense? The "inter"-suffix (=something added before a word) actually means it refers to ''multiple'' nationalities, or nations.
